If you aren’t familiar with internet lingo, DNF means Did Not Finish. Which means I quit on Shadow Princess. To see my reviews for the first three books, visit:
What’s it about?
Tory and Darcy deal with the ripple effects of the events on the Lunar Eclipse and must find a way to work with Darius and Orion.
I couldn’t do it.
I made it 22% into book 4, which equated to about 120 pages (why was this so long?) before I threw in the towel.
The plot failed to hook me. I was not invested in the story, and it needed a clearer direction. I couldn’t tell what the point of this installment was supposed to be – it had no forward momentum at all. The first three books, while cheesy or poorly written, at least had some inertia carrying them forward.
With no real plot to keep me invested, the lousy writing became even more apparent. Maybe it was worse than the first three (it is much longer, so perhaps there was a lot to edit?) but it could just be that I finally took off those rose-colored glasses. It was overly explanatory, using more telling than showing, with too much internal dialogue.
There were also too many POVs. Tory was the only POV I ever cared about, and now that we’re working with four or five (or more) regular POVs instead of just the twins, I felt I was almost spending no time at all in her headspace.
Darcy’s romantic plot went stale two books ago, and I just do not care about it at all. And yet that seems to be the romance with the most focus in this installment.
Should you read it?
No, I can’t recommend Zodiac Academy: Shadow Princess – even as someone who kind of enjoyed the first three.
