If you’re looking for a quick, easy-to-read mystery that doesn’t center a murder and has some gothic elements, you’ll enjoy The Inheritance Games. This is book 1 of a trilogy, and book 2 is going on my to-be-read list!
What’s it about?
A teenager, Avery, learns that a complete stranger has written her into his will – and that she’s inheriting billions. There’s just one catch: she has to live on the estate with his disinherited family for a full year first.
While Avery’s there, her and the late billionaire’s grandsons set out to unravel the mystery of the will…and stay alive despite all those who might stand to gain from her death.
This was a quick, easy, and fun read.
Perhaps it’s my love for Nancy Drew, but I’m a huge fan of stories that expertly weave together convoluted hints and have a young woman at the helm stringing it together. I loved it.
The sprawling mansion and its inhabitants gave the story a unique gothic element. It made for an interesting setting; and it was the perfect backdrop for the series of complicated games Avery had to play to uncover the truth.
I appreciated that the romance was only a subplot. While it added some bit of intrigue, it never took center-stage. The same is true with the lack of violence. While there are some attempts at violence, or some “off-screen” violence, it’s never action-packed.
Side note: I loved the short chapters. It was easy to fly through.
Overall, it’s light, entertaining, and generally unserious – and it’s perfect for what it is.
Should you read it?
If you enjoyed the movie Knives Out and like young adult mystery books (perhaps akin to Nancy Drew) that don’t get too violent or romantic, you’ll enjoy The Inheritance Games.
