If you enjoyed Where the Crawdads Sing, then The Great Alone should be your next read.
What’s The Great Alone about?
When the Allbright family moves to the Alaskan bush, a young girl must learn to survive not just the dangers of the wild but also the dangers inside her home.
This was a captivating and heart-wrenching read.
The writing style was simple and yet engrossing. I could so clearly envision the setting in the Alaskan bush and the people who lived there, and the story moved me to tears several times by the end.
While at times a heavy read, the themes of love, perseverance, and survival buoy the reader through the darker themes and give one hope. It’s a story about life, love, family dysfunction, trauma, grit, justice, and ultimately, Alaska.
While parts in the middle slowed down and a few plot points near the end didn’t fit so well in my opinion, the characters gripped me so much that these minor complaints feel irrelevant to my view on the book as a whole.
Should you read The Great Alone?
Yes – I highly recommend! If you enjoy stories that cover themes of survival, family, and determination, The Great Alone is for you.
