Spoiler-Free Review
This is my review for Sunbringer, book 2 in the Fallen Gods trilogy. Click below for my review of book 1:
- Book 1: Godkiller
What’s Sunbringer about?
After the fallout of book 1, our characters embark on their own journeys to discover answers about their world.
It suffered a little from second book syndrome.
I had much the same feelings with this sequel as I did for the first book. Like Godkiller, Sunbringer has a big quest-like focus, with each of our characters going their own way in attempt to find something to do or recover from what has already happened.
There’s no doubt that the worldbuilding is well done. Plus, the characters are still very well defined, and these continue to the be the trilogy’s greatest strengths. I just wish the plot felt like it had the same amount of depth. Perhaps there was a larger disconnect for me with this one because our main group spent so much of the book apart, and their individual journeys didn’t make up for it enough.
The real problem is, this book never really made me care. Things were happening, and yet nothing was progressing. We needed some serious character stakes, in my opinion, and didn’t really get that. That’s something it lacked compared to Godkiller.
I will say, the second half of the book was definitely more interesting than the first half. There were reveals that surprised me and action that intrigued me. But overall, it was sort of a forgettable experience.
Should you read Sunbringer?
Like book 1, if you like quests, then you’ll probably continue to like this series. If you’re not as into quests, it’s probably not the trilogy for you.
It looks like we’ll be getting the finale, Faithbreaker, in March 2025.
