Spoiler-Free Review
I saw the promotion pictures for the new My Lady Jane TV series on Amazon Prime, and I admit it, I was immediately influenced. I quickly got my hands on a copy, and good thing too, because I adored everything about it.
What’s My Lady Jane about?
In an alternate history where some humans can shift into animals, Lady Jane Grey’s history is completely rewritten. In this version of events, King Edward, her cousin and dearest friend, marries her off to Gifford – who’s a horse. Not only that, but in the process, she’s unwittingly swept up in a plot to steal the throne.
I actually laughed out loud a few times.
My Lady Jane is the kind of young adult book that’s charming enough to also be entertaining for adults. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, and for that I absolutely loved it. It’s a silly good time.
You don’t need to be a history buff to enjoy this story. I recognized the name Jane Grey, but not enough to recall her 9-day stint on the English throne or her significance to history in general. And truly, that doesn’t matter, because her real history is bleak but this story is fun. It even had fourth wall breaks, with the narrators talking directly to the reader.
It’s over-the-top at times and riddled with modern day references and quotes that are implied to have originated with this cast of characters, which honestly just added to the silliness and I loved it.
It slowed down just a smidge at the beginning of part 2, but then it picked right back up and gave us a fitting (and fun) conclusion.
Should you read My Lady Jane?
If you like light and fun fantasy reads, historically inaccurate romps, and girl power, you’ll love My Lady Jane.
Now that I’ve finished the book, I can definitely say that the TV show looks like it’ll deviate from the story. However, I’m going to give it a chance, because it looks like it might be an adaptation that also makes it its own, perhaps like Bridgerton. We shall see!
