Embracing the Joy of Cozy Reading: A retreat for the soul

At the risk of sounding like the Marie Condo of bookworms, I’m going to encourage you in this blog to spark joy – but specifically in cozy reading.

I’ve always been a cozy-reading skeptic myself. But in fits and starts over the last year, I’ve dipped my toes in the tranquil waters of this experience, and now I just have to say, “Come on in, the water’s fine.”

But it’s not just the type of book, it’s also a vibe.

  • Cozy books: stories where the stakes are never truly very high, and they usually spend a considerable amount of time on day-to-day life in addition to a plot (aka “slice of life”)
  • Cozy reading: the ambiance while you read

There’s an important caveat here, and that’s mood. I’m very much a mood reader, so often what I choose to read varies widely based on the kind of story I feel like consuming. But breaking up my heavier, plot-focused reads with books that are delightful has been a great de-stressor.

If I try to read a cozy book outside of the mood to do so – I’m not going to lie – the book may very well strike me as extremely boring. So mood is important.

As for cozy ambiance, I think it’s worth remembering that we live in a fast-paced, tech-heavy world. Personally, I spend what I feel is too much time on social media. Taking a few extra measures to increase the coziness of my environment before I dive into my book makes all the difference to my ability to focus.

Those few extra steps almost allow me to disconnect entirely from the Internet, work, and other responsibilities, allowing me to put my full attention on the book. Let’s dive into this a little more.

Cozy reading is an art.

Cozy reading goes beyond merely flipping through the pages of a book. It’s an art form that combines literature, ambiance, and self-care, creating a sanctuary where one can immerse themselves in the world of stories and ideas. As we dive into the pages of a book, we allow our minds to wander, granting us a mental escape and a break from the constant stimulation of screens. It encourages mindfulness and self-reflection, nurturing our emotional well-being.

First, create the perfect environment.

To truly embrace the cozy reading experience, setting the right atmosphere is crucial.

Picture a soft, oversized armchair, a plush blanket, and a warm cup of tea or hot cocoa. Dim the lights or light a few candles for a soothing ambiance. Surround yourself with pillows and add a touch of nature with potted plants or a bouquet of flowers. Leave your phone and computer in another room where you won’t be inclined to retrieve them. If you’re worried about missing a call, turn the ringer up, but keep it out of sight and out of reach.

These simple elements can transform any space into a cozy haven that cradles your imagination, and effectively disconnect you from your day or previous activity.

Through cozy reading, we embark on extraordinary journeys without leaving our cozy corners. We can travel to distant lands, immerse ourselves in different cultures, and delve into the depths of human emotions. Whether it’s a thrilling mystery, a heartwarming romance, or an enlightening non-fiction work, books provide a gateway to experiences beyond our own realities.

Pick something that you truly want to read. Nothing will interrupt these immaculate vibes more than choosing a book that’s an absolute chore to slog through.

Cozy reading is self-care.

Cozy reading is an act of self-care, allowing us to prioritize our well-being. It grants us permission to indulge in guilt-free moments of relaxation, self-reflection, and even personal growth. It encourages us to unplug from the demands of daily life and indulge in the pleasure of getting lost in a good book.

In this digital age, cozy reading reminds us of the simple joys of tangible books and the power of imagination.

Embracing cozy reading in everyday life is transformative.

Set aside dedicated time for reading, be it in the morning, during lunch breaks, or before bed. Create reading lists and explore different genres to expand your literary horizons. Join book clubs or engage in discussions with fellow book enthusiasts to share your thoughts and discoveries. And most importantly, allow yourself the freedom to enjoy the process without pressure or judgment.
