Bookish Acronyms: A running list

Hello, bookish friends. If you’re new to the online book world, you will more than likely come across a variety of acronyms with no explanation. But never fear – I’m here to help.

I’ve compiled a list of the bookish acronym meanings I know (in alphabetical order), and will continuously update this list as I learn new ones. Let me know in the comments if one you see a lot is missing.

Bookish Acronyms

  • ARC: advanced reader copy (also eARC, for electronic ARC)
  • BN: Barnes & Noble
  • CR: currently reading, or current read
  • CW: content warning
  • DNF: did-not-finish (often used as a verb, as in “I DNF’d that book”)
  • DRC: digital review copy
  • F/F: female/female (as in a female/female relationship)
  • FMC: female main character
  • FTB: fade to black (when a sex scene happens off-page)
  • GR: Goodreads
  • HEA: happily ever after
  • HFM: happy for now
  • KU: Kindle Unlimited
  • MC: main character
  • MG: middle grade
  • M/F: male/female (as in a male/female relationship)
  • M/M: male/male (as in a male/male relationship)
  • MMC: male main character
  • NA: new adult
  • OOP: out of print
  • OTP: one true pairing (a “ship,” as in a reader’s preferred romantic pairing)
  • PNR: paranormal romance
  • POV: point-of-view
  • RR: reread
  • RTC: review to come
  • SFF: science fiction & fantasy
  • TBR: to-be-read
  • TW: trigger warning
  • WIP: work-in-progress (usually used in reference to a writer’s current project)
  • YA: young adult

  • ACOTAR: A Court of Thorns and Roses (book and series name)
    • ACOMAF: A Court of Mist and Fury
    • ACOWAR: A Court of Wings and Ruin
    • ACOFAS: A Court of Frost and Starlight
    • ACOSF: A Court of Silver Flames
  • CC: Crescent City series
    • HOEAB: House of Earth and Blood (sometimes referred to as CC1)
    • HOSAB: House of Sky and Breath (sometimes referred to as CC2)
  • FBAA: From Blood and Ash (book and series)
  • GOT: Game of Thrones
  • HP: Harry Potter
  • JKR: JK Rowling (see HP)
  • JLA: Jennifer L. Armentrout (see FBAA)
  • LOTR: Lord of the Rings
  • SJM: Sarah J. Maas (see ACOTAR, CC, TOG)
  • SOA: Song of Achilles
  • SOC: Six of Crows
  • TOG: Throne of Glass
