October memes

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Hello, book nerds!

Spooky month is officially behind us. From seeing SenLinYu on book tour to completing my first writing challenge to handing out full-sized candy on Halloween night, I feel like I had a great month.

SenLinYu’s book tour event was solid. And so was the book (which weighs a nice 3 pounds or so, if you were wondering). It was wonderful to hear her speak about her writing and her process after Manacled took over my brain a couple years ago.

On writing: I wrote about 15,000 words in October, which is great (although the final two weeks of the month were so busy, I think I wrote a max of about 2,000 words in that time). But I have a confession — I procrastinated on my main WIP so hard that I started a new one (sorry, N, I haven’t told you about it yet), and this new one hasn’t let up its grip on me. Right now, I’m just enjoying the writing process and not focusing so hard on the planning side of things. We’ll see how much trouble that gets me in when it’s time to edit. The prose is a little more lush, the atmosphere a little darker, and there may or may not be a heavily tattooed man in the mix. And fun fact, it’s unfolding as an interview. More to come.

Last month, I read some great books and DNF’d a solid handful. So a mixed bag. I meme’d about it:

  • I haven’t decided yet if I’m going to formally review, but if I do, I’ll share this Thursday.
  • The Maid was really cute and lightweight. But there were some courtroom errors I couldn’t overlook, and some other logistical issues that meant I really couldn’t give it more than 3 stars.
  • Done & Dusted was an average audio that I actually DNF’d once before because it took forever to get going. But there was some interesting dirty talk that had me driving on the highway like, “oh damn, okay!”
  • Uh, not for me. They kinky, tho
  • Ledge hooked me at first, but lost me with a murky middle
  • The Dragon Republic never hooked me. Book 1 was a 3.5 for me, so not bad, but book 2 just wasn’t doing anything for me. Maybe I’ll try again some other time
  • The humor of Mate wasn’t my thing (the word “jizzmuffin” was used four times on a page — I can’t suspend my disbelief enough to picture the supposedly biggest and baddest wolf alpha leader saying this word and worse)
  • The writing style for Goddess of the River was very distant. It’s probably really good for its target audience, though
  • I stopped around 33% in Vampires of El Norte because there was so much repetitive inner monologuing (and I audibly groaned out loud in annoyance at how the characters acted when they finally reunited, which I spent that whole 33% waiting for, for the record)
