9 Reasons to Use Your Local Library (Besides Free Books)

The Unsung Heroes
Reading Time: 2 minutes

The most underestimated resource in the United States is the local library. Everyone knows if you want to read a book for free, then the library is the place to go. But it’s so much more than that.

Libraries are community centers, archives, workspaces, and places to just be. Let’s dive in.

1. Free media resources

The most obvious here is books, but did you know your library also has DVDs, newspapers, magazines, streaming services, audiobooks, and eBooks? Speaking of eBooks, many libraries partner with apps like Libby or Overdrive, which you can access on any device from anywhere. As long as you have a library card, you can read eBooks and audiobooks or even watch movies without setting foot in the library.

2. Libraries of things

Not all libraries might offer this, but many do. A “library of things” consists of non-media items available for loan. Think musical instruments, telescopes, tools, sewing machines, kitchen appliances, garden equipment, seeds, children’s toys, electronics and any other assortment of stuff. The list is literally endless. Whether you need a science kit or craft supplies, many library loans items go far beyond just books and movies.

3. Community services

Did you know that a lot of libraries will help you with your taxes? You can also find educational assistance like tutoring or college prep, as well as job prep through resume or cover letter help. Many also provide language and accessibility tools, and even citizenship prep. Whatever you might need help with, ask a librarian.

4. Community events and workshops

Many libraries host free workshops that anyone can sign up for. At my local library, I’ve seen classes for gardening, water painting, various crafts, technology training, educational seminars, and even food preserving. If you’re a parent, there’s often children’s programs and storytelling available as well.

5. Social engagement

Outside of educational classes, there are also meetings and groups that can provide a way to meet other locals and foster a sense of community. These might be book clubs or writing groups, movie screenings, or other meet-ups over shared interests.

6. Free and quiet workspace with WiFi

There are very few indoor places we can go without the expectation of spending money, let alone somewhere with free WiFi. If you’re a student or someone who works remote, the library can be an invaluable alternative to home if you need a place to focus. Many also have dedicated study rooms you can reserve.

7. Interlibrary loans

If your library doesn’t have what you’re looking for, don’t worry. Many libraries work in conjunction with other nearby libraries in the area – if you put in a request for something specific, it’s very likely that it can be found and brought to you.

8. Equal access

Libraries don’t care how much money you earn, how much education you have, how old you are, or what your background is. The library is for everyone.

9. Supporting the community

The best way to ensure the continued funding of libraries for future generations is to use them. If you’ve read this far, then you can already see what a value libraries are to our local communities. If you want your fellow friends and neighbors to continue having access to the resources a library provides, go pay it a visit.
