The “classics” get a bad rap for being difficult to read, and for good reason. I myself tend to stay away from most classics because I find them boring and hard to get immersed in. However, there’s a few that I didn’t just enjoy, I loved them. It’s a small list, so let’s dive in:
1. Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy
This one will have you saying, “Why are men?”
Premise
Far From the Madding Crowd is about a headstrong woman named Bathsheba Everdene and her relationships with three very different suitors in rural Victorian England.
Should you read it?
This if for you if you enjoy drama, romantic intrigue, a little humor, as well as commentary on love, gender roles, and social class.
2. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
I honestly had an easier time understanding the language after watching Bridgerton.
Premise
Pride and Prejudice follows the romantic entanglements of the Bennet sisters, particularly the strong-willed Elizabeth Bennet and the stiff Mr. Darcy, in Georgian England.
Should you read it?
This is the OG enemies-to-lovers. If you enjoy stories with wit, romance, and satire, you’ll want to read this one.
3. Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
The drama. It was controversial for its time due to its challenges to Victorian morals – which I’m here for.
Premise
Wuthering Heights is a Gothic novel that tells the story of the doomed love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, and the tragic consequences of their passions on the families that surround them in the moorlands of northern England.
Should you read it?
If you like gothic tales and stories that directly challenge the status quo, buck up against religious and social values, and generally make lots of people uncomfortable, this is for you.
