Happy new year, book nerds!

It was a great year in books for me, I had so many new favorites. Here are 2023 top reads (in no particular order). Click the titles for my reviews.

One Dark Window — Review to come

If you liked Uprooted by Naomi Novik, this should definitely be on your radar. I’m currently reading the sequel, and I’ll do a review for both at the same time in the coming weeks!

A Dowry of Blood

A Dowry of Blood by ST Gibson

This seductive read is for anyone who’s into polyamorous erotic horror that analyzes abusive/controlling relationships.

Ninth House

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

The dark academia blended with fantasy and horror, and the outstanding writing, made this one of my more memorable reads in 2023. Pinky promise, I’m reading the sequel soon!

A Fate Inked in Blood

A Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle L. Jensen

This one comes out February 27! I read it as an ARC and it was a fun time. If you’re a romantasy fan, this is for you.

House of Earth and Blood

House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City 1) by Sarah J. Maas

Those last 200 pages had me in an absolute chokehold.

Fourth Wing

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

I have to admit, I didn’t really like the sequel so I feel like that has lowered my esteem for book 1. But hey, I still had a good time reading it, so it’s made it to this list.

Warbreaker

Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson

My first Brandon Sanderson novel did not disappoint. I’m looking forward to his Mistborn series, which is on my TBR for this year.

Water For Elephants

Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen

I was surprised by how much I liked this one. I listened to the audiobook and it was wonderful.

The Paris Apartment — Review to come

The only mystery that made it to this list – I really enjoyed the multiple narrators in the audiobook. Overall, it was an interesting story with an interesting setting. I’ll also be posting this review in the coming weeks.

Honorable Mention: Manacled

My first fanfiction experience – and wow, was it mind-blowing! One of my best reading experiences from this year, and it wasn’t even a book. It’s certainly not for everyone, but if you like dark romances, dystopian, and war stories, you’ll probably love this Harry Potter reimagining that rewrites the end and blends it with The Handmaid’s Tale, with Hermione Granger as the lead. Click here to read it on AO3.

  1. I agree with One Dark Window being a favourite. I’m currently assembling my favourites of 2023 list and I remember it so vividly even though I read it several months ago. It’s so atmospheric too you can’t help but feel immersed in the story.

    • Atmospheric is a great word for it! And such a unique magic system. Have you read Uprooted? If you liked ODW, you’d probably like it!
